Candelaria Awards €1.2 Million Contract for Las Caletillas Coastal Regeneration
Construction firm Satocan has been awarded a €1.2 million contract to begin a six-month project restoring the Las Caletillas coastline in Candelaria, Tenerife.
Work is finally set to begin on the regeneration of the Las Caletillas coastline in Candelaria, Tenerife, following the awarding of the contract to the construction firm Satocan. The €1.2 million project marks the end of a lengthy administrative process, which included a previous tender that was declared void last December. The project is part of the "Tenerife and the Sea 2026-2030" strategy and is jointly funded by the Tenerife Island Council, which is covering 85% of the costs, and the local town hall.
The project aims to restore the natural profile of the beach and surrounding area in Cho Vito, which has deteriorated over time due to the buildup of sediment and gravel. With approval from the General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canary Islands Maritime Space, the work will involve screening and redistributing existing materials to return the beach to its original state. Once construction begins, the project is expected to take six months to complete, with work required to start within the next year.
Candelaria Mayor Mari Brito highlighted the significance of this milestone, noting that it follows years of negotiations between different government bodies. She also credited the local community for their persistence, specifically thanking the El Pueblito Neighborhood Association and its president, Fernando Rodríguez, for keeping the issue at the forefront of the political agenda.
Coastal regeneration projects like this are becoming increasingly important in the Canary Islands as authorities work to address erosion and manage natural sediment. For the residents of Candelaria, the Las Caletillas project is more than just an aesthetic or tourism improvement; it is the fulfillment of a decade-long neighborhood request to restore a space that is central to local identity and leisure.
