Candelaria Approves Redevelopment Plan for Abandoned Hotel Tenerife Tour
Candelaria has approved a revitalization plan to transform the long-abandoned Hotel Tenerife Tour site into a mixed-use development featuring retail spaces, public plazas, and improved coastal access.
The long-abandoned Hotel Tenerife Tour in Las Caletillas, which has been an eyesore on the Candelaria coastline for over a decade, is finally set for a transformation. The municipal council has granted initial approval to the Urban Environment Action Program (PAMU), marking the first step in revitalizing the site, which has been closed since 2011.
The project, led by the supermarket chain Mercadona, aims to turn the 8,355-square-meter plot into a mixed-use space that combines retail with new public areas. The plan divides the land into four sections: a residential area of up to three stories, a large commercial space for the supermarket, a smaller retail area, and two plots totaling 1,476 square meters that will be handed over to the City Council for public terraces and pedestrian walkways.
This initiative is part of the broader "Tenerife and the Sea" strategy, which seeks to improve the island's coastal areas. The design includes widening the promenade to ten meters, creating a new public square, and converting the old hotel swimming pools into public solariums and sea-access points. Because the site sits on protected coastal land, the project must still pass a strict environmental assessment to ensure it meets safety and conservation standards.
Candelaria’s mayor, María Brito, described the project as a vital opportunity to boost the local economy and social life. By replacing the derelict hotel—which currently acts as a barrier between the town and the sea—with a modern, accessible hub, the council hopes to reconnect the community and revitalize the area after thirteen years of neglect.
