Better early detection and advanced treatments have fundamentally changed cancer care in Spain, shifting the focus from treating an acute illness to managing a long-term, chronic condition. Clinical data from La Candelaria Hospital highlights this success: survival rates have reached over 95% for breast cancer, 89% for lung cancer, and 82% for colon cancer. However, these improvements have put unprecedented pressure on healthcare services, requiring hospitals to expand their capacity for long-term follow-up care.

This team of 32 professionals works through specialized committees, coordinating with departments like Pharmacy, Radiology, and Surgery. This framework follows European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines, which prioritize integrating palliative care from the moment of diagnosis.
Technology is also driving this change. The Day Hospital is focusing on precision medicine—using immunotherapy, biological therapies, and drugs tailored to specific genetic profiles—to improve treatment effectiveness while reducing side effects. Through the Canary Islands Health Research Institute Foundation (FIISC), this research is not only advancing science but also improving the patient experience, with users rating the service 9.24 out of 10 in satisfaction surveys.
Ultimately, the increased workload at La Candelaria reflects a healthcare system that has successfully turned cancer into a manageable condition. Today, patient awareness regarding the importance of regular check-ups is the cornerstone of ensuring a good quality of life after treatment.
