The Canary Islands Youth Orchestra has announced a diverse second-half schedule featuring an eight-island brass tour and a symphonic collaboration with folk group Los Sabandeños that will travel across the archipelago and to mainland Spain.

The Canary Islands Youth Orchestra (Jocan) has announced its schedule for the second half of the year, focusing on reaching audiences across all the islands and blending different musical styles. Supported by the Canary Islands Institute of Cultural Development, the orchestra has planned two main projects to showcase its talent both locally and nationally.

The first project, A todo bronce (All Brass), will see a group of eleven brass musicians—including horns, trumpets, trombones, and a tuba—perform across all eight islands from July 17 to 26. Led by trombonist Mark Hampson, the ensemble will play a 20th-century program featuring works by composers like Dukas, Gabrieli, and Parker. This tour, the orchestra’s 25th gathering, begins rehearsals on July 13 in El Hierro, where the first concert will also take place. The tour will then visit La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. All performances are free to the public.

The second phase, the orchestra’s 26th gathering, shifts to a symphonic format to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the folk group Los Sabandeños. Under the direction of Víctor Pablo Pérez, the orchestra and the folk group will perform a program titled Raíces (Roots), which explores the connection between folk music and the works of Manuel de Falla.

This tour begins in the Canary Islands with performances in Tenerife (September 19), Fuerteventura (September 20), and La Palma (September 22). The groups will then take the show to the mainland, performing at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona on September 24 and the National Music Auditorium in Madrid on September 26.

The performances will be split into two parts: the first features pianist Juan Floristán performing Falla’s music alongside winning pieces from a recent orchestration competition. The second part will highlight iconic songs from the career of Los Sabandeños. By blending folk traditions with classical music, the project aims to support the professional development of the orchestra’s musicians, with 80 of its members set to participate in these upcoming events.
