The Canarian team has finished competing in the Ssireum World Championship for foreigners in South Korea. They achieved an outstanding result for wrestling in the Canary Islands, with two world titles won by wrestlers from La Palma, Alejandro Afonso and Cristina Rodríguez Santana.

In the men's competition, Alejandro Afonso, also from La Palma, became the Ssireum world champion for foreigners. He won by beating fellow Canarian Alberto Zamora in the final. Afonso had reached the final after a tough, back-and-forth semifinal match against Eusebio Ledesma. Zamora, meanwhile, earned his spot in the final by defeating Batmagnai from Mongolia.

The other members of the men's team also performed very well throughout the championship. Ismael Déniz, Elieser Gutiérrez, Isael Rodríguez, and Eusebio Ledesma all advanced through several rounds, competing against wrestlers from countries like Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, China, and Italy.

For the women, Cristina Rodríguez Santana, from La Palma and representing Club Tenercina, won the Ssireum world champion title for foreigners. She defeated Dayana from Kazakhstan in the final. Cristina showed excellent technical skill throughout the championship, winning all her matches convincingly.

These two world titles, won by Afonso and Rodríguez Santana, highlight the strong position of Canarian wrestling on the international stage right now. The team will next compete in the open categories of the 2025 Ssireum World Championship.
