Canary Islands Weather Alerts Lifted as Trade Winds Ease

The Canary Islands are experiencing a transition toward more stable weather as trade winds ease and all yellow weather alerts are lifted across the archipelago.

Unsettled weather will continue across the Canary Islands this Thursday. While the trade winds that have impacted the western islands are beginning to ease, they are still being felt. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the strong gusts that triggered weather alerts earlier this week are dying down, and all yellow warnings have been lifted. However, residents should still exercise caution during the early morning hours.

The weather is currently in a period of transition. While temperatures remain low enough to cause frost at high altitudes in Tenerife, the rest of the islands are seeing stable conditions. Temperatures will reach between 16 and 21 degrees in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Sebastián de La Gomera. In La Palma, temperatures are expected to range from 14 to 19 degrees, while Valverde on El Hierro will see highs between 12 and 15 degrees.

Light rain is expected, mainly affecting the northern and eastern slopes of the islands, where it will remain cloudy. These showers could be slightly heavier in the northeast of La Palma during the first half of the day. In contrast, the peaks of Tenerife will enjoy clear skies, despite the cloud cover lingering over the mid-altitudes and coastal areas of the western islands.

The wind remains the main factor to watch. Although it is expected to calm down as the day progresses, Aemet warns that strong gusts are still possible in specific areas, including the peaks of La Palma, El Paso, and various slopes across Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. As the trade winds shift toward an easterly direction at higher altitudes and coastal breezes return to normal, the weather is expected to stabilize across the region for the remainder of the week.
