Canary Islands: Varied Weather, Mountain Frost Alert
The Canary Islands expect generally calm weather today with regional variations, including partly cloudy skies in the east, cloudy spells and possible light rain in the west, and a risk of frost in high mountain areas.
The Canary Islands can expect generally calm weather today, though there will be some differences depending on the island and how high up you are, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The eastern islands and Tenerife will see mostly partly cloudy skies. The western islands will have some cloudy spells, especially La Palma, where light rain is possible.
Also, cooler overnight temperatures could lead to frost in high mountain areas, which is normal for this time of year. At sea, conditions will remain choppy with swells coming from the north and northeast.
Tenerife and the eastern islands will mostly have partly cloudy skies. Later in the day, cloudy spells might appear in the north and east. In these areas, some light, scattered rain is possible overnight, especially where exposed to the trade winds.
Temperatures will stay much the same, mild along the coast but cooler in mid-to-high elevations. Winds will be moderate from the east, shifting to the northeast from midday, and will be stronger in high areas.
A key feature today will be light frost, which could be moderate in some spots on Tenerife's central peaks. Aemet also says this could happen in the highest areas of La Palma and Gran Canaria, so drivers on high mountain roads should be careful in the early morning.
La Palma is expected to be the most unsettled island. The north and east will stay cloudy with light rain in the early morning, possibly moderate in places. Light rain might also return overnight.
The rest of the island will see cloudy spells, with some clear periods possible. Temperatures will be steady, and winds will be moderate from the east, stronger in the far southeast and northwest, and will shift to the northeast from the afternoon.
La Gomera's north will have cloudy spells, while the rest of the island will be partly cloudy. Temperatures will change little, and winds will be light to moderate from the east, shifting to the northeast in the afternoon.
El Hierro will have mostly stable weather, with partly cloudy skies and occasional cloudy spells in the north. Temperatures will stay much the same, and winds will be similar to the other western islands.
At sea, Aemet predicts east or northeast winds of force 3 to 6, leading to moderate or rough seas. Swells from the north or northeast, with waves of 1 to 2 meters, will gradually calm down during the day.
However, showers could occur in the coastal waters north of La Palma overnight, so extreme caution is advised for anyone on the water or in exposed coastal areas.
