Canary Islands Updates Tenerife South School Infrastructure Plan

The Canary Islands Ministry of Education has updated its plan to modernize schools in the south of Tenerife, a region struggling to keep up with rapid population growth. Under the leadership of Poli Suárez, the 2024-2031 Educational Infrastructure Shock Plan has been revised to confirm ten completed projects, with eight others currently in various stages of development.

Key changes for this year focus on San Miguel de Abona. The government is now prioritizing a new Special Education Center (CEE) in Las Chafiras and plans to expand the CEIP Llano de las Naciones to accommodate more students. Conversely, plans for a previously proposed CEE in Arona have been scrapped because the necessary land could not be secured—a common hurdle in the islands' fastest-growing areas.

Iván G. Carro, head of the General Directorate of Infrastructure and Equipment, explained that these annual updates are essential to keep construction schedules in line with the changing needs of local communities. He noted that the overall plan remains on track, with the focus now shifting to clearing the bureaucratic hurdles needed to get new centers built.

This planning is vital, as the south of Tenerife has long struggled to provide enough infrastructure for its growing population. The Ministry emphasizes that transparency is key to ensuring that public funds are effectively used to create the school places needed to relieve pressure on existing, overcrowded facilities.
