Canary Islands University Hospital Opens New Pediatric Recreation Area to Support Patient Well-being
The University Hospital of the Canary Islands has opened a new 130,000-euro pediatric recreation area, funded by the DinoSol Foundation, to improve the emotional well-being of young patients and their families.
The University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) has taken a major step toward making healthcare more patient-friendly by opening a new recreation and rest area in its pediatric ward. According to the Canary Islands Ministry of Health, the space is designed to help ease the emotional stress of hospitalization for the nearly 1,000 children treated at the hospital each year.
The project, which cost 130,000 euros and was funded by the DinoSol Foundation, reflects a growing shift in the Spanish public health system toward creating environments that go beyond basic clinical needs. This initiative supports the Canary Health Service’s "Person-Centered Strategy," which focuses on the mental well-being and quality of life of patients, acknowledging that a child’s surroundings play a key role in their recovery.
The renovation includes both an indoor room and an outdoor terrace. Beyond updating essential plumbing and electrical systems, the space has been redesigned with furniture and finishes that feel less clinical and more welcoming. Because the area connects directly to the hospital classroom, it offers children a place to play, learn, and spend time with their families away from their hospital rooms.
The opening was attended by representatives from the Canary Health Service and organizations such as the Spanish Association Against Cancer and Pequeño Valiente. This project is part of the DinoSol Foundation’s "Respiro" (Respite) program, marking their third such initiative in the region following similar projects at the Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote and the CAE in Telde, Gran Canaria. This partnership highlights how public-private collaboration can provide hospitals with non-medical resources that are essential for supporting families during difficult times.
