Over 10,750 students in the Canary Islands have begun university entrance exams that prioritize analytical reasoning over rote memorization while implementing new security measures to prevent electronic cheating.

The University Entrance Examination (PAU) began this week in the Canary Islands, marking a continued shift toward testing analytical skills rather than rote memorization. Over 10,750 students are taking the exams, with 5,466 at the University of La Laguna and 5,284 at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

This new approach, where reasoning skills account for 35% of the grade, is paired with tighter security. To ensure fairness, authorities are piloting the use of frequency detectors at random locations to prevent the use of unauthorized electronics, such as smartwatches or wireless earphones.

The first day featured a Spanish Language and Literature exam that challenged students to analyze an opinion piece on empathy and interpret a poem by Gloria Fuertes. This focus on critical thinking over encyclopedic knowledge reflects a broader trend in Spanish education, aligning with current national assessment standards.

Logistically, this year saw the opening of the La Vera sports center in Puerto de la Cruz to host 412 students from northern Tenerife. The space was prepared through a collaborative effort between seven local secondary schools, which provided 500 desks and chairs. Unlike standard university classrooms, the venue includes additional facilities to support students throughout the exam period, which runs until Friday.

While decentralizing the exam venues presents an organizational challenge, students have welcomed the change, as it allows them to take their tests closer to home. This massive operation highlights the complexity of balancing local accessibility with the high standards required for university entrance.
