Canary Islands Under Yellow Alert for Dust Haze
Spain's Aemet has issued a yellow alert for dust haze across the Canary Islands starting Monday, bringing rising temperatures and easterly winds, with Tenerife expected to see the highest dust concentrations.
Spain's national weather agency, Aemet, has issued a yellow alert for dust haze across the Canary Islands this Monday. This marks a change in the islands' weather, as the dust-filled air follows an earlier warning for strong winds and rough seas, highlighting how quickly conditions can change in the region.
The dust is expected to start settling in at 6 AM and will affect all the islands. However, Tenerife will likely see the highest concentrations of dust, particularly in its eastern, southern, and western parts, especially at altitudes above 400 or 500 meters.
Along with the dust, temperatures are set to rise. Tenerife could see highs of 26 degrees Celsius, with inland areas and mountain peaks experiencing the most significant warmth. Overnight lows will also climb slightly, especially in the island's southwest.
As for the wind, coastal areas can expect light to moderate easterly breezes. Higher up, on the mid-slopes and summits, winds will be moderate from the southeast, with strong gusts possible in the early morning.
The forecast for the entire Canary Islands is similar to Tenerife's. All islands will experience the dust haze, with it being more noticeable on the southeastern mid-slopes of the taller islands. Minimum temperatures will either stay much the same or rise slightly on the southern slopes of the central islands, while maximum temperatures will increase considerably inland.
