The Canary Islands government is initiating a €14,900 project using ground-penetrating radar near Los Rodeos airport to search for potential mass graves from the Spanish Civil War and dictatorship.

The Canary Islands government, specifically its Ministry of Justice and Security, is launching a project to find potential mass graves near Los Rodeos airport in Tenerife. These graves may contain people who were persecuted during the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship.

The project, costing 14,900 euros, has been given to the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory of Tenerife (ARMHIT). This funding comes from national resources allocated for Democratic Memory initiatives.

This effort is part of the Ministry's broader goal to acknowledge and investigate the past. They aim to locate individuals who went missing during the Civil War and the dictatorship, and to honor and restore the dignity of the victims.

The project involves using ground-penetrating radar to scan about 90,000 square meters of land next to the airport. This technology allows for examination without digging.

Following the scans, a technical report will be created. This report will detail the findings and suggest next steps for any further investigations.
