Canary Islands Tenders €10.2 Million San Blas Wastewater Project in Tenerife
The Canary Islands government has launched a 10.2 million euro tender for the San Blas wastewater pumping station in Tenerife to improve sanitation infrastructure and ensure compliance with European Union environmental standards.
The Canary Islands government has officially put the construction of the San Blas Wastewater Pumping Station (EBAR) out to tender, marking a major step forward for water management in Tenerife. The 10.2 million euro project is designed to improve local sanitation and help Spain meet European Union standards, avoiding potential penalties for failing to comply with wastewater treatment regulations.
Managed by the Directorate General for Water, the project will connect Candelaria, Punta Larga, and Igueste to the regional treatment plant in Valle de Güímar. To achieve this, crews will install a 2,454-meter pipeline capable of pumping water across an 86-meter elevation gain. The new facility, located near the San Blas promenade, will include large regulation tanks, advanced odor-control systems, high-capacity pumps, and backup power to ensure reliable operation.
The project faces several technical hurdles, including tunneling under the TF-1 motorway and working within a sensitive urban area near the Basilica of Candelaria. Minister Manuel Miranda noted that the project has been delayed for years by the complex administrative coordination required between the Cabildo, local councils, and various environmental and heritage agencies.
Beyond the engineering work, the project includes plans to protect local plant species, such as cardón, tabaiba, and balo, to ensure the construction respects the local ecosystem. By upgrading this infrastructure, the regional government aims to improve coastal water quality, encourage the reuse of treated water, and better support the area's growing population.
