Canary Islands Telethon Seeks Aid for 6,000 Children Facing Poverty
The Mírame Televisión and Food Bank Telethon on December 17 at Mercatenerife is urgently seeking donations to help 6,000 severely impoverished children and 40,000 low-income individuals across the Canary Islands.
Mírame Televisión and the Food Bank are calling on the people of the Canary Islands to support their upcoming Telethon. This event, taking place on December 17 at Mercatenerife, aims to help 6,000 children in the islands who are facing severe poverty this Christmas.
Organizers are urging companies and individuals to donate more, especially for families with children, due to a worrying increase in child poverty across the islands. The charities involved urgently need food, baby products, diapers, hygiene items, pacifiers, baby bottles, formula milk, new toys, clothing, and footwear.
All donations collected on December 17, and in the days leading up to it at official collection points, will be given out by 200 charities, coordinated by the Food Bank, to 40,000 people from low-income families, including more than 6,000 children. The aim is to meet the basic needs of these families before Christmas and in the months that follow.
You can drop off donations at any authorized collection point (find the list at mirametv.com) or directly at Mercatenerife on Wednesday, December 17, between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Mírame Televisión will broadcast the event live all day, with extra updates on their social media channels.
A recent report from EAPN Canarias shows that 40.2% of children in the islands are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. This alarming statistic highlights why organizers are stressing the urgent need to help families with children.
For more than ten years, the Telethon has been the biggest charity event in the Canary Islands. It has helped charities support the most vulnerable, especially when resources are scarce, and after European funding was cut. The next event is on December 17 at Mercatenerife.
