Canary Islands-Shot Films and Tarantino’s 'Kill Bill' Cut Lead Spanish Box Office Surge
The Spanish box office sees a major boost this week with a diverse lineup featuring Canary Islands-produced films, high-profile literary adaptations, and the exclusive premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s definitive Kill Bill cut, The Whole Bloody Affair.
The Spanish box office is getting a significant boost this week, thanks in part to a surge of films shot in the Canary Islands. Following successful runs at the Málaga Film Festival, three new titles are hitting theaters, showcasing the archipelago’s versatility as a filming location and a hub for local talent.
Leading the domestic releases is Solos, the second feature from director Guillermo Ríos. Based on a story by Paloma Bravo and starring Kira Miró, Salva Reina, Carlos Santos, and Elia Galera, the tragicomedy follows a group of friends as they confront their personal insecurities. Meanwhile, Alexis Morante’s A una isla de ti uses Gran Canaria as the backdrop for a story about unconventional relationships, featuring Freddie Dennis, Jaime Zatarain, Julia Martínez, and Toni Acosta. Rounding out the local highlights is Violeta Salama’s Auri, which stars Cristina Marcos, Karra Elejalde, and Salva Reina in a story about reinventing one’s life after retirement.
The week’s lineup also features major literary adaptations. Boulevard, directed by Sonia Méndez, brings the popular Wattpad novel by Mexican author Flor M. Salvador to the screen, starring Eve Ryan and Mikel Niso. Additionally, the drama No te olvidaré, directed by Vanessa Caswill and starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, adapts Colleen Hoover’s novel to explore themes of redemption and family.
International films are also making an impact. Kirk Jones premieres Incontrolable, a biopic about activist John Davidson that highlights the realities of living with Tourette syndrome. For fans of fantasy, Atrapando a un monstruo explores childhood fears with a cast that includes Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver. Elsewhere, Júlia de Paz Solvas presents La buena hija, a drama examining the effects of vicarious violence on teenagers.
Finally, Quentin Tarantino fans have a major event to look forward to: the premiere of The Whole Bloody Affair. This definitive version of Kill Bill combines both volumes into a single, four-and-a-half-hour cut, featuring never-before-seen footage and an extra animation sequence. Starring Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, and Daryl Hannah, it offers a rare chance to experience this modern action classic in its entirety.
