The Canary Islands Government, Cabildo de Tenerife, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council have signed a €41.7 million agreement to build nearly 300 public social rental homes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to address the housing shortage.

The Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, working through its Housing Institute (ICAVI), has signed a deal with the Cabildo de Tenerife's Ministry of Municipal Cooperation and Housing and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. This agreement aims to build nearly 300 public homes for social rent on the island.

The official signing of this agreement will take place in the coming weeks. It will pave the way for two government-backed affordable housing projects: 37 homes in the María Jiménez neighborhood and 226 in the Cuevas Blancas area. After construction, these homes will become part of the Canarian Housing Institute's public housing supply, which will then manage and assign them to residents.

The total investment for these projects is estimated at 41.7 million euros. This funding comes under the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025. The regional government stated that the goal is to boost the number of public rental homes available and address the housing shortage in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Under the agreement, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through its public company Viviendas, Proyectos y Obras Municipales de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, S.A., will be responsible for developing and carrying out the construction work. They will also provide the land and cover the costs of preparing the sites.

Once the homes are finished, they will be handed over to the Canarian Housing Institute to be added to its public housing supply.

The Cabildo, for its part, is helping to fund the project. Its contribution ensures that this large-scale initiative is feasible and strengthens cooperation between the different government bodies.

All homes built through this agreement will be classified as government-backed affordable housing. They will be permanently rented out as social housing.

These homes will be assigned according to current rules, specifically for families or households with limited incomes. They are intended to be used as a primary and permanent residence.

The projects will follow the technical standards set for affordable housing, meeting high levels of quality, functionality, and efficiency. The goal is to provide respectable and sustainable long-term housing options.
