Canary Islands Remain Under Weather Alerts Amid Lingering Heat and Strong Winds

The Canary Islands are experiencing a shift in weather this Thursday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). While temperatures are beginning to drop slightly, the islands remain under a weather alert due to lingering heat and strong, unstable winds.

Official data shows that temperatures will stay high in the mid-altitudes of southern and western Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, with highs reaching 34°C. Gran Canaria is also dealing with "tropical nights," where temperatures on the southeast coast will not fall below 25°C. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range between 24°C and 31°C, while Fuerteventura will see highs near 34°C in its southern interior. Lanzarote is expected to see a more significant cooling trend.

In addition to the heat, strong trade winds are affecting the region. Aemet has issued yellow wind warnings for most of the islands, though these will begin to ease in Lanzarote by midday. These gusty winds pose a particular risk to mountain peaks and exposed slopes, especially in the northwest and southeast of Tenerife.

Maritime conditions are also hazardous. A yellow warning remains in place for Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria due to rough seas. Northeasterly winds are expected to reach force 6, and up to force 7 on the high seas. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious, as the slight cooling is not enough to signal the end of the recent heatwave.
