Canary Islands Remain on High Wind Alert as Storm Therese Recedes

The Canary Islands remain under weather alerts for strong winds and rough seas as the region begins to recover from the passage of storm Therese.

The Canary Islands are beginning to settle after the passage of storm Therese, though the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns that fully stable weather is still a few days away. Strong winds remain the main concern today, keeping several areas on alert as clouds gradually clear toward the north.

These trade winds, common in the islands' unique landscape, will be strongest on northern and northeastern slopes. Aemet has issued warnings for high wind gusts, particularly in northwest Tenerife, the metropolitan area, and parts of La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro. Conditions at sea remain rough, with winds reaching force 4 to 6 and swells of up to two meters.

Temperatures will remain steady across the islands. Light, scattered rain is expected only in the mid-altitudes of the northern, mountainous regions. On Mount Teide, light frost is possible at the summit.

Expected temperatures across the islands are as follows:

  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Sebastián de La Gomera: 17°C to 22°C
  • Santa Cruz de La Palma: 15°C to 21°C
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 18°C to 21°C
  • Arrecife: 16°C to 22°C
  • Puerto del Rosario: 17°C to 22°C
  • Valverde: 13°C to 16°C

The ongoing wind serves as a reminder of how weather can disrupt daily life, air travel, and port operations in the archipelago. While skies are expected to clear in the south and east, authorities advise residents to stay alert for potential issues caused by sudden wind gusts.
