Canary Islands Remain on High Alert as Heatwave Persists

The Canary Islands will see a slight drop in temperatures this Wednesday, but the risk of extreme heat remains. While the intense heatwave is beginning to ease, temperatures across most of the archipelago will still exceed 30°C.

The weather remains challenging. Tenerife expects highs of 32°C, with some areas reaching 34°C. However, the main concern is focused on Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, where the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow weather warnings from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. as temperatures are forecast to hit 34°C. The presence of calima—Saharan dust—is also expected to affect mid-altitude areas and mountain summits, particularly on southern and eastern slopes.

Because of these conditions, the Canary Islands government remains on high alert for forest fires across Gran Canaria and the western islands. Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. Strict safety rules are in place: avoid any activity that could cause a fire, such as using fireworks or discarding cigarette butts. Residents are also advised to clear dry vegetation from around their homes and keep basic firefighting tools and water supplies on hand.

In the event of a fire, citizens should call 1-1-2 immediately and follow the instructions of emergency teams. If an evacuation is ordered, residents should turn off gas and electricity, and leave with their identification and essential belongings.

Looking at the rest of the day, skies will remain mostly clear, with some low clouds in the north by evening. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with stronger gusts expected along the northwest and southeast coasts. While temperatures are slowly falling, officials advise staying alert until humidity and wind conditions improve and current warnings are lifted.
