Canary Islands Reality Film Fest "Miradas Afroindígenas" to Showcase 22 Films, Honor Maite Alberdi

The Miradas Afroindígenas film festival in Puerto de la Cruz will screen 22 reality films from November 22nd to 29th, featuring tributes to Maite Alberdi and José Luis Guerín, alongside international competition and student programs.

The Canary Islands International Reality Film Festival, Miradas Afroindígenas, will show 22 films from November 22nd to 29th at the Sala Timanfaya in Puerto de la Cruz. To attend, you'll need to get your tickets online through Tickety.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, November 22nd, at 7:30 PM with an opening ceremony. During the ceremony, filmmaker Maite Alberdi from Chile will receive the Personal Narrative award, and journalist Georgina Higueras will be honoured with the Lucid Vision award. After the ceremony, Alberdi's film "The Mole Agent" (2020) will be screened.

The tribute to Alberdi continues on Sunday, November 23rd. Her film "The Club" (2014) will be shown at 5:00 PM, followed by "The Eternal Memory" (2023) at 9:00 PM. In between these screenings, at 7:00 PM, Alberdi will participate in a discussion about cinema with critic and journalist Javier Tolentino.

A special screening features the Canary Islands premiere of José Luis Guerín's latest film, "Stories from the Good Valley" (2025). This film is coming to Tenerife after winning the Special Jury Prize at San Sebastián. The screening is on Friday, November 28th, at 9:00 PM. Before the film, at 7:00 PM, Guerín will be in conversation with Canarian filmmaker Nayra Sanz Fuentes.

The Docuanima section, dedicated to animated reality films, will present two titles. "Olivia and the Clouds" by Tomás Pichardo Espaillat (2024) will be shown on Saturday, November 29th, at 5:00 PM. On the same day, at 7:30 PM, during the closing ceremony, there will be the Canary Islands premiere of "The Perfume of Iraq" by Léonard Cohen (2024).

The EducaDoc program for students includes special screenings of "With Grace" (2024), co-directed by Julia Dahr and Dina Mwende, and "Seeds of Kivu" (2024) by Néstor López.

The main competition section features 14 films competing in three categories: International Feature Film, Debut Film, and D.O. Canaria. Films in the D.O. Canaria category include "Miguel Velázquez, the Professor of the Ring" (David Cánovas, 2024), "The Meadow and the Moon" (Cayetana H. Cuyás, 2025), "In Silence" (Sara Sálamo, 2025), "Listening to the Shadow" (Miguel Morales, 2024), and "Letters from the Zoo" (David Pantaleón, 2024).

Miradas Afroindígenas will also host a series of talks and meetings with various professionals working in reality filmmaking.
