At a recent meeting at the Tacoronte Agricultural Training School, regional leaders—including President Fernando Clavijo and Minister Narvay Quintero—highlighted generational renewal as the top priority for the region’s agricultural policy.
The event brought together representatives from all seven islands to share stories from new professionals choosing to work in rural areas. Data presented at the meeting shows that 250 new people have entered the sector over the last two years. While this is a modest start, it marks a significant shift away from the historical trend of abandoning farms. Tacoronte Mayor Sandra Izquierdo noted that the sector's future depends on more than just passion; it requires professional training and better ways to get products to market.
These new agricultural workers are proving that farming can offer a good quality of life. Participants at the forum agreed that the key is combining technical skills with efficient business management, moving away from the grueling, traditional labor models of the past.
This shift is essential for the islands' sustainability. With a heavy reliance on imports and increasing pressure on rural land, the region needs a stronger local food supply.
