Authorities in the Canary Islands are preparing for the solar eclipse on August 12, with official viewing sites now confirmed. Following a coordination meeting led by Government Delegate Anselmo Pestana, the strategy focuses on providing public access to key locations in Tenerife, specifically Puerto de la Cruz and Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora.
While the event will be a total eclipse in parts of the Spanish Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, it will appear as a partial eclipse from the Canary Islands, with the moon covering nearly 70% of the sun. The eclipse will begin at 6:58 p.m. and last until sunset at 8:45 p.m., reaching its peak at 7:53 p.m. Because the sun will be low on the horizon, these specific locations were chosen to provide a clear view toward the west, free from buildings or geographical obstacles.
Beyond managing crowds and logistics, officials are prioritizing public safety and eye health. Authorities stress that observers must use certified eclipse glasses. They strongly warn against using homemade filters—such as X-rays, film negatives, or smoked glass—as these can cause permanent eye damage.
Experts also advise checking your glasses for any scratches or damage before use. Even with proper equipment, you should limit your time looking directly at the sun and keep your glasses on for the entire duration of the event, as the sun will never be fully obscured in the Canary Islands. The Government Delegation is working closely with local councils and emergency services to ensure a safe experience at all designated viewing points.
