The CCOO trade union reports that the Canary Islands' postal service is facing severe operational strain and public delays due to a lack of resources and training in the government's new immigrant regularization initiative.

The process of regularizing immigrants in Spain has put significant strain on post offices across the Canary Islands. The trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) says that while it supports the government’s initiative, the way it is being carried out is flawed and is hurting the quality of service.

Pedro Segura, representing the union’s postal division, argues that there is a major disconnect between planners in Madrid and the reality on the ground. He notes that management provided very little notice, leaving staff without the proper training or instructions to handle these requests. This lack of preparation, combined with a failure to hire extra staff, has led to serious delays for the public.

While the post office’s wide network is usually a strength, it is currently being undermined by a lack of resources. The union points out that authorizing only 24 service points for the entire archipelago is insufficient to meet the expected demand. This limited reach, paired with understaffing, has created bottlenecks that make it difficult to manage such an important social process effectively.

This situation highlights the challenges of asking already busy public services to take on additional migration-related tasks. The union is calling for a restructuring that includes more service locations and real investment in staff. Ultimately, the Canary Islands case serves as a warning: when the government introduces major new policies, they must provide the resources necessary to support them.
