Canary Islands Parliament Rejects Funding Boost for "Barrios Orquestados"
Canary Islands' regional parliament rejected a proposal to secure multi-year funding of up to one million euros for "Barrios Orquestados," a social music project providing free education to children in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The regional parliament in the Canary Islands has rejected a proposal to increase funding for the "Barrios Orquestados" project in the 2026 budget. This social and musical initiative, which has been active for over ten years in various neighborhoods across the islands, was seeking more money to ensure its financial stability and continued operation.
The Canarian Socialist Party put forward the amendment, suggesting multi-year funding of up to one million euros to secure the program's future. However, when the vote took place, it received 20 votes in favor (from the Socialist Party and Nueva Canarias) and 42 votes against. This majority vote led to its rejection.
"Barrios Orquestados" offers free music education and lends instruments to children in neighborhoods facing difficult economic and social conditions.
