Canary Islands Opens Nominations for 2027 Literary Honors

The Canary Islands government has officially opened the search for the literary figures to be honored during the 2027 Canary Islands Letters Day and Canary Islands Women Writers Day.

Academic institutions, universities, local councils, and publishing organizations are invited to submit their nominations via the government’s online portal until May 31.

This selection process is part of a broader effort to strengthen the archipelago’s literary history. Rather than a political decision, the final choice will be based on a report from a commission of cultural experts. This group will evaluate candidates based on their professional achievements and their impact on the artistic development of the Islands. Their recommendations will then be sent to the Ministry of Culture for final approval by the Governing Council.

These annual commemorations are vital for preserving the region’s intellectual heritage. Canary Islands Letters Day, held every February 21 to honor the thinker José de Viera y Clavijo, is a key event in the cultural calendar. Meanwhile, Canary Islands Women Writers Day focuses on highlighting and celebrating the contributions of female authors who have shaped regional literature. Through this initiative, the government aims to ensure that honoring these writers remains a consistent way to celebrate Canarian cultural identity.
