Canary Islands NGOs Launch "Peace and the Word" Talks in La Laguna
Seven Canary Islands NGOs will participate in the "Peace and the Word" talks in La Laguna from November 25th to December 5th, sharing their work to promote global solidarity and sustainable development.
Seven Canary Islands NGOs and solidarity groups are taking part in a series of talks called "Peace and the Word" in La Laguna. Starting this Tuesday, November 25th, and running until December 5th, these groups will share their goals, work, history, and plans. The event's theme is "understand and transform the world."
The talks will be held at Sala San Borondón (C/Daute, 1. La Laguna, Tenerife) at 6:00 PM on November 25th to 28th, and again on December 2nd, 4th, and 5th.
This project is organized by the Center for Canarian Popular Culture (CCPC) in partnership with the Vice-Ministry of Foreign Action of the Canary Islands Government.
The participating organizations, in order of appearance, are: Diocesan Caritas, the Canarian Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi People, Boole Ma (Canarian Association for the Support of Migrants), the Federation of African Associations in the Canary Islands, the Canarian League for Education and Interculturality, Healthcare Workers with Palestine, and the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR).
The project aims to inform society, encourage critical thinking, and deepen understanding of global sustainable development and solidarity. This aligns with Law 1/2023, passed on February 20th, which focuses on Cooperation for Sustainable Development and Global Solidarity.
The UN estimates that about 10% of the world's population currently lives in extreme poverty. Its 2024 "Multidimensional Poverty Index" report shows that out of 1.1 billion people in extreme poverty globally, 40% live in countries affected by war, instability, or limited peace. Rising global temperatures worsen this poverty, leading to more migrations.
"Peace and the Word" is planned to be an annual event. Through this project, the CCPC hopes to spread awareness and encourage more people to join existing networks or create new solidarity projects, both within and outside the Canary Islands.
The name "Peace and the Word" is inspired by "Romance de la Paz condenada" (Ballad of Condemned Peace), a work by writer Pedro Lezcano that was later set to music by singer Mari Carmen Mulet. Its message remains relevant today.
