The Canary Islands' "Neuro-Olympics" initiative is promoting healthy aging by engaging nearly 2,000 seniors in a program that combines physical exercise with cognitive challenges to foster social connection and mental sharpness.

The Canary Islands are redefining what it means to age actively through the "Neuro-Olympics," an initiative that has grown from a local project into a major regional event. Nearly 2,000 people over the age of 60 now participate in these games, which combine physical exercise with mental challenges like memory and precision tasks.

The program, led by organizers Besay Rodríguez and Óscar Morales, has expanded across several municipalities, turning competition into a tool for social connection. By blending cognitive stimulation with physical activity, the project aligns with public health goals to help seniors maintain their mobility and mental sharpness.

A recent gala at the Adán Martín Auditorium in Tenerife celebrated the program’s success, honoring eight women for their contributions. The event was attended by regional officials, including Vice President Manuel Domínguez and Minister of Education Poli Suárez, signaling government support for expanding the model across the archipelago.

For participants, such as those from the El Tinglado Club in Santa Úrsula, the games offer a chance to break their daily routines and build friendships across different towns. Many seniors have even organized inter-island trips to compete against other teams, proving that a little friendly rivalry can boost confidence and independence. Ultimately, the Neuro-Olympics show how local communities can transform senior care into an opportunity for personal achievement and active, vibrant living.
