Canary Islands Literature Celebrated at Tenerife Event
A literary event in Tenerife this Friday celebrates "Te pondrán flores en el estómago," a new anthology showcasing emerging Canary Islands writers, led by editor and award-winning author Elsa López.
A new book of Canary Islands writing, "Te pondrán flores en el estómago" (They Will Put Flowers in Your Stomach), is being celebrated at a special literary event. The book, which is a collection of new writing from the Canary Islands, is the focus of the event organized by the Domingo Pérez Minik Cultural Observatory.
The evening will be led by Elsa López, who won the Canary Islands Literature Prize in 2022. She's also the editor of the book and a mentor to many young writers today. The event, called "New Flows of Canary Islands Literature," is this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Tenerife. Entry is free. You can buy the book at the Librería de Mujeres in Tenerife.
Alongside López, writers Marcos Dosantos and Covadonga García Fierro will be there, as well as other authors who have work in the book. The event is sponsored by the CajaCanarias Foundation and supported by the Círculo de Bellas Artes, who are working with the Observatory for the first time.
"Te pondrán flores en el estómago" (2024) includes stories, poems, and plays by Canary Islands writers under 40, from different islands or with connections to them.
Elsa López has been a driving force behind this project, mentoring a new generation of writers who are exploring themes like identity, landscape, relationships, memory, love, and the body. The book features mostly new writing in different styles. It was edited by Paula Fernández Hernández, a professor at the University of La Laguna.
The book includes work by Andrea Abreu, Nayra Bajo de Vera, Fabio Carreiro, Manuel Conejo, Marcos Dosantos, Covadonga García Fierro, Celia Lorenzo, Echedey Medina, Beatriz Morales, Sandra Padrón, Antonio M. Piñero, Dimas Prychyslyy, Alba Tavío, Óscar Liam Torres, and María Valerón.
