Canary Islands Launches Regional Comic and Illustration Contest for Young Artists
The Canary Islands government has launched its Regional Comic and Illustration Contest, offering young creators aged 16 to 30 a platform to showcase their work and compete for cash prizes ahead of the 23rd International Comic and Illustration Fair of Tenerife.
The Canary Islands government is once again championing young talent with the launch of the Regional Comic and Illustration Contest. Organized by the Directorate General for Youth in partnership with the Cine+Cómics Foundation, the competition serves as a vital platform for local creators and will be a highlight of the 23rd International Comic and Illustration Fair of Tenerife.
The contest is open to residents or natives of the islands aged 16 to 30. Participants can submit up to three entries via the Foundation’s website until September 25th. Winners in the best comic categories (color and black and white) will receive 1,000 euros each, while the best script and best illustration will each be awarded 500 euros.
Beyond the prizes, the contest highlights the power of comics to address important social issues. This year’s promotional artwork was created by Ingrid Torres, who won last year for a piece exploring the reality of migration—a testament to the medium's role in sparking reflection on contemporary topics.
The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on October 30th at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. This initiative is part of a wider effort to professionalize the local comic industry, offering emerging artists a prestigious stage and reinforcing the role of comics as a key part of the region's cultural identity.
