The Canary Islands have launched "Smart Economato," a student-developed software tool designed to digitize and streamline logistics for hospitality and tourism vocational training centers.

The Canary Islands have taken a major step toward digitizing logistics in education with the launch of "Smart Economato," a new software tool built for Vocational Training centers specializing in hospitality and tourism. The project was officially unveiled this week at the CIFP Virgen de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with Carolina León, the Director General of Vocational Training and Special Regime Education, in attendance.

Coordinated by professor David Escuder Pérez, the software stands out because it is tailored specifically for an academic setting. Unlike standard commercial systems, this tool recognizes that ingredients in hospitality schools are used for teaching rather than just for profit. Because of this, students studying Web Application Development were able to design and program the software to meet the unique needs of kitchen workshops, where managing supplies requires a careful balance between food safety and hands-on learning.

The new technology aims to solve common operational hurdles, such as tracking products and reducing administrative paperwork. By automating the entire process—from receiving goods to distributing them—the system helps schools meet safety and sustainability standards while giving students practical experience with the digital tools used in the modern workplace.

Supported by the "Ecocomedores de Canarias" initiative, the project also highlights a commitment to using local and organic products. Beyond improving efficiency, the app is designed to streamline communication between schools and their suppliers, ensuring that deliveries meet the high standards required for training. Ultimately, "Smart Economato" shows how innovation can transform vocational education, equipping students with the technical skills they need to succeed in their future careers.
