Canary Islands Launch First Laboratory-Grown Seagrass Restoration Project

Innoceana has launched a pilot project in the Canary Islands to restore declining seagrass meadows by transplanting laboratory-grown Cymodocea nodosa into the wild.

Marine ecosystem restoration in the Canary Islands reached a key milestone this week with the launch of a pilot project in Abades, Arico. Led by the organization Innoceana in partnership with the Island Council (Cabildo), the project marks the first time Cymodocea nodosa—commonly known as "seba"—has been transplanted into the wild after being germinated and grown in a laboratory.

The team secured eight seedlings to the seabed at depths of 8 to 12 meters using biodegradable anchors. This site was chosen to help restore seagrass meadows that have steadily declined in recent years. To ensure the project's success, the seeds were carefully collected from donor areas in El Médano and La Jaquita using a manual, low-impact method designed to protect the health of the original colonies.

This initiative also serves as a three-year monitoring study. Researchers will track whether this method can successfully restore degraded areas, helping to stabilize sediment, capture carbon, improve water clarity, and provide essential habitats for marine life.

However, Innoceana emphasizes that human intervention is not a substitute for stopping environmental damage. Data shows that the archipelago has lost more than half of its seagrass meadows in recent decades due to human activity, including improper boat anchoring, coastal development, construction, and poor wastewater management.

Innoceana’s long-term goal is to establish a regional network of nurseries to scale up seabed restoration across the islands. Even so, the experts remain cautious: they stress that while restoration technology is a vital tool, it must complement conservation efforts rather than serve as an excuse to continue the destruction of these critical ecosystems.
