Canary Islands Launch Cultural Initiatives to Promote Emotional Literacy and Creative Writing
The Canary Islands are launching a series of cultural initiatives led by Gabriel Maldonado that utilize creative writing and storytelling workshops to foster emotional literacy and community engagement across the archipelago.
The Canary Islands are strengthening their commitment to emotional literacy and creative writing through a series of new cultural initiatives. Led by Gabriel Maldonado and the group La Fábrica 2.0, these projects aim to use storytelling to bring communities together, connecting professional artists with schools and the general public.
This week, the focus shifts to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Municipal Library will host a series of workshops on metafiction led by author Víctor Conde. Taking place on October 22 and November 5 and 11, these sessions will guide participants in creating heroic characters inspired by the positive civic values found in everyday life.
Meanwhile, the project is also reaching students across Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, and Fuerteventura through an initiative called "The Three Wise Men Factory." This program tailors its approach to the specific needs of each island’s community. For younger primary school students, the focus is on writing letters that emphasize humanitarian goals and collective well-being, helping children play an active role in sharing important cultural values.
These programs are made possible through public funding from local city councils, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Canary Islands Institute of Cultural Development. For Maldonado, these efforts highlight how language—whether written or spoken—can be a powerful tool for social change, helping people express their emotions and engage more deeply with their communities.
