Canary Islands Issue Yellow Weather Warning as Strong Winds and High Temperatures Hit

The Canary Islands face a yellow weather warning for strong winds reaching 80 km/h alongside rising temperatures that are expected to hit 30°C in some areas this Saturday.

The Canary Islands face a day of contrasting weather this Saturday, as rising temperatures coincide with unsettled conditions. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow weather warning for the province of Tenerife due to strong winds and rough coastal conditions.

Trade winds will be the main feature of the day, blowing particularly hard across the peaks and exposed slopes of the mountainous islands. Gusts could exceed 80 km/h in high-altitude areas, including El Paso in La Palma and the southern parts of the Tenerife metropolitan area by the afternoon. Authorities advise extra caution in these high-altitude regions and at the northwestern and southeastern ends of the islands.

Despite the wind, temperatures are set to climb. Southern mid-altitude areas could see the mercury hit 30°C. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range from 21°C to 28°C, while San Sebastián de La Gomera will see highs of 26°C. Santa Cruz de La Palma is expected to reach 25°C, and Valverde in El Hierro will remain cooler, between 14°C and 19°C.

While this combination of heat and strong trade winds is a regular occurrence in the islands, the current warnings are in place to ensure safety along the coast and in higher regions. The sky will be mostly clear, though low clouds are expected to gather on northern and northeastern slopes during the early morning and late evening.
