Canary Islands Issue Weather Warnings for Strong Winds and High Heat

The Canary Islands are bracing for a day of unsettled weather this Friday, as strong trade winds and lingering high temperatures create challenging conditions. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued warnings, urging the public to exercise caution on both land and at sea.

Strong northeast winds are the primary concern, with the most intense gusts expected in the southeast and northwest of the islands, as well as across Lanzarote and southern Fuerteventura. In the Jandía massif, wind speeds could exceed 80 kilometers per hour. Coastal areas will also be affected, with rough seas and strong winds making conditions dangerous for nautical activities.

While temperatures will dip slightly in higher altitudes, inland areas facing south and west will remain hot. Gran Canaria is expected to see the highest temperatures, potentially reaching 34°C. In Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Palma, thermometers will likely climb above 30°C in several areas. Capital cities will see varying highs: 30°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 28°C in Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario, 26°C in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de La Palma, and 21°C in Valverde.

The weather will be mostly clear, though light haze from suspended dust is expected at higher altitudes, particularly in the eastern islands. While northern coastal areas may see some cloud cover, the combination of high heat, strong winds, and reduced visibility from the haze means residents and visitors should stay alert, especially in metropolitan areas and on the southern slopes where the wind will be strongest.
