Canary Islands Issue Weather Warning as Saharan Dust and Heat Arrive for Holy Week

The Canary Islands have issued a yellow weather warning as a Saharan dust cloud, rising temperatures, and gusty winds arrive for the start of Holy Week.

The Canary Islands are set for a shift in weather as Holy Week begins, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). A yellow weather warning has been issued as a calima—a cloud of Saharan dust—moves in. Starting early in the day, the dust will reduce visibility and affect air quality, beginning in Tenerife before spreading across the rest of the islands.

This dusty spell will coincide with a noticeable rise in temperatures. After the recent influence of storm Therese, the archipelago will see maximum temperatures climb to between 17 and 27 degrees Celsius. This warming will be most intense in the mid-altitude and summit areas, though minimum temperatures are expected to remain steady.

Tuesday’s weather will also be defined by gusty winds. While skies will generally be clear—aside from some lingering morning clouds in the north—the wind will be a significant factor. Moderate winds with strong gusts are expected, particularly at the southeastern and western ends of the islands, as well as on the summits and northern slopes of Tenerife.

Aemet notes that the wind will shift to the east during the first half of the day, picking up speed in specific areas, including the northwestern slopes of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the El Golfo area of El Hierro, and the summits of La Palma. With the combination of dust, rising heat, and strong winds, officials are urging caution for anyone planning outdoor activities during the start of the holiday period.
