Canary Islands Issue Extreme UV Radiation Alert for August 10–14
The Canary Islands are under high-risk UV radiation alerts through August 14, with health experts warning that cloud cover does not protect against dangerous sun exposure.
Weather reports indicate that the Canary Islands face a high risk of sun exposure between August 10 and 14. This serves as a reminder that cloud cover can be deceptive; many people mistakenly believe they are safe when the sky is overcast. In reality, UVA and UVB rays can easily penetrate clouds, meaning your skin and eyes remain at risk even when the sun is hidden or the temperature feels cooler.
The islands' geographical location and high altitudes further increase these risks. In Tenerife, all municipalities are on alert, with Vilaflor de Chasna reaching extreme levels. Similar conditions are expected in La Gomera, specifically in Alajeró, and in El Hierro, where El Pinar is at an extreme risk level, while Frontera and Valverde remain at very high risk.
Gran Canaria faces the most significant challenge, with extreme UV levels expected in Artenara, Tejeda, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Vega de San Mateo, Valleseco, and Teror. The rest of the island is under a very high-risk alert. La Palma, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Graciosa are also forecast to experience very high levels of radiation during this period.
Health experts emphasize that cooler weather does not mean the sun is less dangerous. It is essential to use broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear certified sunglasses, and cover your head, especially during the middle of the day. These precautions are vital for everyone, particularly children, the elderly, and those who work outdoors. Even when the sun is not visible, it is important to stay vigilant against this invisible threat.
