Canary Islands Issue Coastal Risk Alert for Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera

The Canary Islands government has issued a coastal risk pre-alert for Tenerife, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria, effective from 9:00 p.m. this Tuesday, September 1. This decision follows weather forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and is part of the region’s emergency plan for adverse weather.

The alert is due to north and northeast winds reaching sustained speeds of 30 to 50 km/h, with gusts potentially hitting 61 km/h. These conditions will lead to rough seas and waves of up to two meters. The impact will be most significant along the northwest and southeast coasts of Tenerife, the eastern coast of La Gomera, the west of Gran Canaria, and the waters between these islands.

Authorities are urging the public to take extra precautions near the coast. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid piers, breakwaters, and swimming in unsupervised or restricted areas. If you fall into the water, stay away from the breaking waves and call 1-1-2 immediately; do not attempt a rescue if it puts your own safety at risk. These alerts are a standard safety measure in the Canary Islands, where the coastline is frequently exposed to changing Atlantic conditions.
