Canary Islands Invests €3.3M in 36 Audiovisual Projects

The Government of the Canary Islands has invested 3,329,000 euros to support 36 local audiovisual projects, including feature films, series, animated works, documentaries, and short films, selected through two application rounds in 2025.

The Government of the Canary Islands is providing support to 36 audiovisual projects from the islands. These projects include feature films, series, animated works, documentaries, and short films.

The selection was made through two application rounds organized in 2025 by the General Directorate of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries. These rounds sought projects that were either ready for production, in a minority co-production phase, or still in development, as well as short films ready for production.

A total of 3,329,000 euros has been invested in these projects. Expert committees made the final choices, and the full list of selected projects can be found on the website www.icdcultural.org, under "Calls for applications."

The fiction feature films chosen for production are: Especies distintas by Laura Pérez Gómez; El jardín de té, directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego; La sombra de la arena, directed by Aarón J. Melián; and Fiesta negra, written and directed by Guillermo Magariños.

Other projects going into production include the documentary feature films: Milagro y miseria, co-directed by Marina Alberti and José A. Alayón; Regreso al rayo verde, directed by Juanma V. Betancort; and Herr Franco must go!, by Miguel G. Morales. Also selected are the animated series Limbo ville by Israel Hernández, and Super Truck, directed by Rubén Zarauza and Iria G. Caballero.

For minority co-productions, the fiction feature films are: El día del fin del mundo encontraré tu pasado, from El Viaje Producciones with Chile's Globo Rojo; Señoras de la limpieza, by Mararía Films with Portugal's Uma pedra no sapato; Caza y pesca, by MGC with Uruguay's Kiko Vivo Producciones and Argentina's Pensa&Rocca; and Ya no siento el corazón, by Volcano International Productions with Sweden's Doppelganger Film.

Other co-produced documentaries include: The possibility of man, by Tourmalet Films with Dutch partners Worldisuals Film and Stichting ten Zuiden van de Grens; and La mujer del barco, by Ngaro Games La Casa de los Enigmas with Spanish companies Burbuja Films and Freews.

Projects currently in the development phase include the fiction feature films: Tropic (Helena Girón), La fuga (Verónica Galán), Tierra (Arima León), Seres eléctricos (David Pantaleón), ¿Quién es la virgen? (Ana Sánchez Gijón), Los extraños (Gonzalo López-Gallego), and Arroró (canción de cuna), directed by Carla Valdés.

Also in development are the documentaries: Heurtebise (Octavio Guerra), Y punto (Javier Tolentino), and Ruidos en el agua (Joan López Lloret). Additionally, the animated film Cave of dreams (Dorota K. Welchman and David Baute), and the animated series Howly wooly (Pierre Paris) are in development.

Finally, the short films selected are: Cayó la tarde (Carolina Montesdeoca), La teta (Dailos Vega), Graniza en Tacoronte (Airam Rodríguez), El traductor de pájaros (David Pantaleón), Barranco (Pablo Vilas), 210 (J. Morala), Naturaleza cálida (Joel Cazorla and Chemi Pérez), Por los pelos (Jeniffer Castañeda García), and La maceta (Octavio Guerra).
