Canary Islands Initiative Bridges Geographical Gap for Local Creatives

The creative sector in the Canary Islands is evolving. A new initiative, led by the Colectivo Loba Lab, is working to overcome the region's geographical isolation by combining technology with expert mentorship. Throughout June, the group has hosted a series of events that go beyond simple exhibitions, focusing instead on technical training and helping island-based creators reach an international audience.

The project’s strength lies in how it blends digital production with in-person learning. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, the laboratory offers a diverse program that includes podcasts, live sessions, and artist acceleration programs. Upcoming highlights include a literature cycle led by poet Elsa Moreno and a panel of visual arts experts, featuring Art Madrid artistic director Yudinela Ortega, as well as specialists in intellectual property and curating.

This strategy is vital for artists who need to navigate global markets to build sustainable careers. The program focuses on knowledge sharing through intensive mentoring sessions for small groups of fifteen participants in both literature and the visual arts. The June schedule also highlights sound experimentation, featuring a new audiovisual project from the electronic duo Dyatlov and an exploration of island identity through the music of singer Cristina Ruiz.

By aligning with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the collective aims to democratize access to culture and build a collaborative network that helps Canarian creators compete on a level playing field. By combining digital tools—such as their online portfolio platform and marketplace—with direct access to national industry leaders, the project is helping local talent overcome the historical challenges of working far from major mainland hubs.
