Canary Islands Industrial Sector Advances Decarbonization Through New Sustainability Initiative

The Canary Islands' industrial sector is advancing its decarbonization efforts through the Femete-led INDUCES program, which provides companies with technical support and diagnostics to measure and reduce their carbon footprints.

The Canary Islands’ industrial sector is moving closer to decarbonization following a recent technical conference in La Laguna. Organized by the federation Femete, the event focused on integrating corporate mobility into company sustainability plans. The initiative is part of the INDUCES program, funded by the Canary Islands Government, which helps industrial businesses accurately measure and audit their environmental impact.

Tracking travel—both for goods and employee commutes—has become essential for companies aiming to meet European reporting standards. During the event, Director General of Industry Ana María Zurita noted that the sector’s future competitiveness relies on adopting more efficient management models, adding that public-private collaboration is key to this transformation.

Femete president Juan Antonio Jiménez Arranz stressed that sustainability must move beyond theory and focus on practical, operational solutions. Through the INDUCES project, companies receive personalized diagnostics and technical support. The program’s methodology focuses on three main areas: identifying emission sources, using real data to reduce them, and offsetting remaining carbon footprints through projects like those managed by the Foresta Foundation.

This approach is especially important for the Canary Islands, where logistics and work-related travel make up a large portion of a company’s carbon footprint. The conference highlighted that accurate measurement is the first step toward saving costs and optimizing resources.
