Canary Islands Hit by Unseasonable Heatwave with Temperatures Reaching 34°C
The Canary Islands are experiencing an unseasonable heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 34°C, prompting authorities to warn of increased forest fire risks across the archipelago.
The Canary Islands are experiencing an unusually hot spell this Wednesday, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reporting summer-like temperatures across much of the archipelago. This heat, driven by stable weather and clear skies, will be most intense in inland areas and at mid-altitudes.
Gran Canaria is expected to see the highest temperatures, with thermometers hitting 34°C in the southern, western, and southeastern mid-altitudes, while the island's peaks will approach 30°C. Tenerife will also be warm, with temperatures reaching 30°C in the Santa Cruz metropolitan area and across several eastern, southern, and western slopes. Similar conditions are forecast for Fuerteventura, where the southern interior will reach 32°C, as well as Lanzarote, La Gomera, and El Hierro, where inland areas will also climb to 30°C.
The weather is being driven by persistent northeasterly winds. While generally moderate, Aemet warns of stronger gusts on the northwestern and southeastern slopes, with locally very strong winds expected in Gran Canaria by the afternoon. At higher altitudes, southwesterly winds will be stronger, increasing the risk of forest fires—a constant concern during such heatwaves.
Sea conditions will remain relatively calm, with force 3 to 5 winds creating slight to moderate seas, though southwestern coasts will remain calm. While the day may start with some low cloud cover in the north, skies are expected to clear, allowing for strong sunshine and reinforcing the summer-like heat throughout the day.
