Cafetería Venezia, a historic 1955 establishment in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, is gaining renewed popularity for preserving traditional Canarian home-style cooking amidst a landscape of modern dining trends.

Historic restaurants in the Canary Islands are gaining attention for their ability to resist the trend of standardized, modern dining. A prime example of this resilience is Cafetería Venezia, located in the Plaza de la Constitución in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which was recently featured by the content creators at @guachinchesmodernos.

Founded in 1955 by an Italian entrepreneur, the café has kept its original character for nearly 70 years. For the past 15 years, it has been managed by Jose, who has evolved the business from a simple breakfast spot into a full-service restaurant that focuses on traditional, home-style cooking.

The menu, which has become a hit online, features classic recipes. Its signature dish is the "Venezia stew," a hearty mix of cabbage, legumes, sausages, and local potatoes. Other staples include potato salad, stuffed eggs, meatballs, tuna in sauce, squid with peas, and torrijas (Spanish-style French toast) served with ice cream.

With a 4.4-star rating on Google, the café is open Tuesday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and stays open until 1:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It is closed on Mondays. As La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage site, these local institutions are vital for preserving the island’s culinary culture, supporting the local economy, and maintaining the city’s historical charm.
