Canary Islands Government Acquires 170 Affordable Homes in Tenerife to Ease Housing Shortage

The Canary Islands’ public housing strategy has taken a major step forward with a new acquisition by Visocan, the regional government’s housing company. The firm has purchased four residential developments in northern Tenerife for €22.5 million, adding 170 new units to the region’s affordable rental supply.

This move is part of the "Rehabita Canarias" program, which aims to boost the housing market by completing buildings that were left unfinished after the real estate crash over a decade ago. By finishing existing structures rather than starting from scratch, the government can use public funds more efficiently, speed up delivery times, and make use of land that has been sitting idle.

Adding these properties to the public portfolio is a significant logistical task. Visocan’s housing department has already begun the administrative process to allocate the apartments. Their main goal is to move quickly so that families can move in as soon as possible, helping to ease the housing shortage in northern Tenerife.

This project highlights a growing trend of regional governments using "turnkey" purchases to bypass the long delays and funding hurdles often associated with traditional public construction. By buying stalled developments, the Canary Islands government is finding a faster way to provide affordable housing in a strained market.
