Canary Islands FP Students Secure WorldSkills Berth
Two Canary Islands vocational training students will represent Spain at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 championship after securing gold medals at SpainSkills 2026, where the islands' team won a total of seven medals.
Canary Islands vocational training (FP) is set to gain international recognition in September 2026, as two of its students will represent Spain at the WorldSkills Shanghai championship. This follows their impressive performance at the recent SpainSkills 2026 event in Madrid, organized by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports. The Canary Islands team brought home a total of five medals from the main competition and two from exhibition categories.
It was the two gold medals in the main competition that opened the door to the world championship. Matías Alejo Segovia Mitrovich, from IES Geneto in Tenerife, won gold in Carpentry. Laura Daniela Puerto Osorio, who began her studies at CIFP Virgen de las Nieves in La Palma and now attends CIFP Virgen de Candelaria in Tenerife, also secured a gold medal in Restaurant and Bar Service. Both victories guarantee their place in the Spanish delegation travelling to China, a significant achievement that showcases the high standard of vocational training on the islands.
Beyond the golds, Lucía María Alemán Marrero from CIFP César Manrique in Tenerife earned a silver medal in 3D Animation and Games. Bronze medals were also awarded to Noé González de la Rosa from CIFP Las Indias for Fashion Technology, and Silvia Peña Raya from CIFP de Adeje for Hotel Reception.
In the exhibition categories, the Canary Islands team secured two more awards: a silver for Daira Santana Suárez from CIFP Majada Marcial in Fuerteventura, in Pharmacy and Parapharmacy, and a bronze for Tristán Tato Duque from CIFP Zonzamas in Lanzarote, in Renewable Energies.
Winning seven medals at such a significant event, particularly qualifying for the world championship, confirms the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports' commitment to modern and specialized vocational training. These results not only showcase the individual talent of the students but also highlight the strength of the archipelago's vocational training system, which is clearly capable of producing highly skilled professionals and projecting its excellence far beyond Spain's borders.
