The Canary Islands Foundation for Flemish Art concludes its month-long cultural series this Monday at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space with a documentary screening and a Renaissance music performance exploring the historical ties between Flanders and the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands Foundation for Flemish Art is wrapping up its month-long series of conferences and cultural events this Monday, May 25, at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The program has spent the last few weeks exploring the lasting impact of trade and cultural exchange between Northern Europe and the Canary Islands during the Early Modern period.

The final event begins at 7:00 p.m. and features two main highlights: film and music. First, the audience will watch The Domestic World of Tenerife and Flanders, a documentary directed by Roberto Ríos that examines the Flemish influence on La Palma and Tenerife throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The evening will conclude with a performance by Camerata Iberia—featuring Magdalena Padilla, Carlos Oramas, and Juan Carlos de Mulder—who will perform a selection of Spanish Renaissance music.

Historian and former CSIC researcher Agustín Guimerá notes that the series is about more than just art; it is a vital look at the Canary Islands' history as a strategic Atlantic hub. During the height of trade with the Low Countries, the influx of Flemish art, furniture, and customs was a defining feature of island life. By hosting these events, the Foundation aims to encourage a deeper understanding of this European legacy and the mercantile networks that shaped the islands' cultural identity for two centuries.
