Canary Islands Forecast: Stable Weather With Strong Winds and High Temperatures

The Canary Islands will experience stable weather this Sunday, though trade winds continue to affect both sea conditions and local temperatures, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The islands’ varied landscape is creating a split in the weather today. The northern slopes of the higher islands—Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro—may see some morning cloud cover and a slight chance of light rain in mid-altitude areas. However, these clouds are expected to clear as the day goes on, leaving the rest of the archipelago with plenty of sunshine.

Temperatures remain high for this time of year in certain areas. The Güímar valley and Candelaria in Tenerife, along with parts of southeastern Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, are expected to reach 30°C. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will hover between 23°C and 29°C. While it is hot in the lowlands, temperatures will be slightly cooler at higher altitudes due to the trade winds.

Wind remains the primary concern, particularly at sea. Aemet has issued warnings for force 5 to 6 winds, with gusts reaching force 7 in the southeast, leading to rough seas and swells. On land, strong trade winds are expected along the southeastern and northwestern coasts of Tenerife. Meanwhile, the southwest of the island will see lighter breezes, and high-altitude areas near Mount Teide will experience a light to moderate southwesterly flow.

Finally, the haze that has affected the eastern islands over the past few days is beginning to clear. Given the rough sea conditions, authorities advise residents and visitors to exercise caution along the coast.
