Canary Islands Flights Disrupted by Strong Winds and Fog
Strong winds and fog have caused significant disruption to over twenty flights across the Canary Islands, leading to delays, cancellations, and diversions, particularly at Tenerife North Airport.
Bad weather is causing significant disruption to flights between the Canary Islands. Strong winds and fog have affected over twenty flights at airports including Los Rodeos (Tenerife North), La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera.
Tenerife North Airport has been particularly impacted, with more than a dozen flights delayed or canceled. Operational issues at the airport in the La Laguna area also affected connections with Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Some passengers scheduled to fly from Tenerife North had to be transported by bus to the Granadilla facilities (Tenerife South Airport). Currently, Los Rodeos has 26 affected flights, with 11 of them diverted to Tenerife South.
This Sunday, the Canary Islands are under a 'yellow alert' (low risk) due to strong winds, which can sometimes exceed 100 kilometers per hour, and rough seas. Aragon and Catalonia are also at this risk level, with Aragon facing avalanche risks, and Catalonia experiencing heavy rainfall and coastal swell in the northeast.
Specifically for the Canary Islands, the yellow alert warns of winds between 70-80 kilometers per hour across the entire archipelago. In some areas, such as the high points of northern Tenerife, wind speeds could reach 90 to 100 kilometers per hour.
Furthermore, the Islands are on yellow alert for rough seas, with winds up to 61 kilometers per hour and waves expected to be between 4 and 5 meters high, according to predictions from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
