Canary Islands Face Strong Winds and Mixed Weather Conditions

The Canary Islands are experiencing unsettled weather this Thursday, with a clear divide between the northern and southern parts of the archipelago, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). While the skies are expected to clear as the day goes on, the morning will bring clouds and rain, particularly in the northern regions and at higher altitudes.

The main driver of this weather is the wind. AEMET expects strong northeasterly winds to pick up from midday onwards. This will affect sea conditions and bring powerful gusts, especially in the southeast, northwest, and inland areas of the eastern islands. The southern tip of Jandía is expected to see particularly strong winds.

Temperatures will vary depending on the location. While overnight lows will rise slightly, daytime highs will drop in the north and at higher elevations. In contrast, temperatures in the south will remain stable or climb slightly.

These conditions are typical of the trade winds, which interact with the islands' varied terrain to create distinct microclimates. After a rainy morning in the mid-altitudes, the weather should improve in the south by the end of the day. Authorities advise caution in coastal and inland areas, as strong afternoon and evening gusts may make outdoor activities difficult.
