Canary Islands Face Limited Long Weekends Before Christmas, December Offers Brief Respite
Canary Islanders will enjoy a four-day weekend from December 5th to 8th, 2025, due to the observance of Teacher's Day on a Friday and the Immaculate Conception holiday falling on a Monday, offering a rare extended break before Christmas.
As mid-November rolls around and the academic year gets into full swing on the islands, the same question pops up every autumn: are there any long weekends before Christmas? This year, 2025, hasn't been very generous with holidays in the Canary Islands.
So far, two holidays this autumn, October 12th and November 1st, landed on a weekend. Since they weren't moved to a weekday, there was no chance to string together extra days off.
This means everyone's hopes are pinned on the last long weekend of the year: the one in December, traditionally linked to Constitution Day.
This year, the holiday dates aren't as helpful as they sometimes are. December 6th, Constitution Day, falls on a Saturday, which means fewer days off for most workers. The good news is that December 8th, the Immaculate Conception holiday, is on a Monday. This at least gives us a decent three-day weekend.
There's a little extra break coming for those in education. In the Canary Islands, Teacher's Day, usually on December 7th, is often used to create an extra day off within a long weekend.
However, in 2025, December 7th is a Sunday. So, the celebration has been moved to Friday, December 5th. This means students, teachers, and school staff will get four days off in a row: from December 5th to December 8th.
While the holiday schedule hasn't offered many extended breaks at the end of this year, December still provides a small chance to relax before Christmas arrives.
On top of this, each town picks two local holidays, and each island has its own special holiday on different dates, adding to the national and regional ones.
