The Canary Islands co-production Magallanes, directed by Lav Díaz and a strong contender for the Philippines' Oscar nomination, premieres this Wednesday in the Archipelago with a free screening and discussion at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, closing the 5th ProCine Conference.

The Canary Islands co-production Magallanes, directed by Lav Díaz, will premiere this Wednesday in the Archipelago. The film is a strong contender for the Philippines' Oscar nomination for Best International Film. It also recently won the Golden Spike award at the Valladolid International Film Week (Seminci), sharing the prize with Kelly Reichardt's Mastermind.

The screening will take place at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes at 7:00 p.m. Afterwards, journalist Verónica Galán will lead a discussion.

This event marks the close of the 5th ProCine Conference, organized by the Institute for Film Training and Research (IFIC), which focused on creative production. Entry to the screening is free, but space is limited. Tickets can be picked up from the TEA box office or reserved online.

The conference, which started on October 14, also offered masterclasses for film professionals at the Tenerife Chamber of Commerce. This afternoon at 4:00 p.m., Montse Triola, who produced Magallanes, will lead a session titled "Do it yourself (But don’t do it alone). Antimethod of film production."

While there was a 50-euro registration fee for the main conference, with discounts available through IFIC (details at jornadas.programadecine.com), all film screenings and discussions are free to attend.

Mexican actor Gael García Bernal stars as the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The film is an international co-production involving Portugal (Rosa Films), France (Lib Films), and Spain, with Spanish contributions from Andergraun Films (Catalonia) and El Viaje Films (Canary Islands).

Other cast members include Portuguese actress Ângela Azevedo Ramos and Mexican actor Darío Yazbek. The cinematography was handled by Artur Tort, a frequent collaborator of Albert Serra, who also served as a producer alongside Montse Triola and José Alayón.

Written and directed by Lav Díaz, Magallanes re-examines the story of Ferdinand Magellan, the explorer who led the first journey around the world between 1519 and 1522. The film offers a critical and human look at his ambition and eventual downfall.

It explores the boundaries of the dream of discovery when faced with the power, faith, and violence of conquest. Director Lav Díaz explains, "It is not the myth of Magellan, but the truth of his journey. I wanted to understand the price of the imperial dream and the solitude of the man who embodies it."
